Recommendation: Hotel Villa Jazmin in Ica, Peru

Normally we are fans of budget accommodation, preferring to spend our money on food but once in a while we like to splurge. Especially if it’s a special occasion.  For Laurent’s birthday in November, I booked us at the Villa Jazmin hotel in Ica, Peru. We took a taxi (5 Soles) to the hotel from the bus station because it’s located on the outskirts in a residential neighborhood.  First things first.  This was such a blessing.  Never in all of my life, in any city I have been to, have I heard so many horns blowing. It is disproportionate to the small population that inhabits the city.  But whatever the reason may be, I was thrilled to be out of that chaos!

The taxi dropped us off revealing a subtle facade.  Behind the large door, the hotel opened up revealing a stunning courtyard-like set up where from the top, you could take in the view of the surrounding dunes. In the middle sat the centerpiece, a solar-heated pool with a swim up bar!  Ding dong!  Chaise lounges lazily surrounded the pool area and there were inviting tables and chairs in the shady areas.  The staff was genuinely friendly and helpful about activities in the area (pisco tasting, sand boarding).  They allowed us to check in early and gave us towels for the pool.  Our room was immaculate.  Industrial in design but impeccable.  The pool was spotless as well.  We had perfect pisco sours poolside and even sampled the solid ceviche on the in-house restaurant’s menu.  The wifi is strong and all rooms have cable flat screen TV’s.  The breakfast buffet is varied and good quality.

The price tag is not cheap for Peruvian standards at $70 US per night (195 Soles) but you get what you pay for.  High quality service, flawless rooms but come on, you really want to come here to swim in that pool with a poolside Pisco sour.  Highly recommended.

  1. A little luxuary on your birthday is always needed. We could jump in that pool right now – it’s 20.47 in Rio as I type but still 24 degrees. It must be beer o’clock!
