Breakfast In South America Part 1: Chile, Argentina and Bolivia

Before leaving for our trip to the continent, I toyed with the idea of writing a book about what people in each country ate for breakfast. I don't know exactly why what people eat for breakfast is a curiosity to me but it has been for some time. There is the whole 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day' thing but I'm not sure that's it. It could go back to almost twenty years ago on my first trip out of the country.

Major Updates!

Wow. Time really does fly! I can't believe it's been 6 months since my last post. Like everyone else in the world, we've been busy, got caught up and I've also taken a much needed break from writing. My focus has shifted to figuring out what is our next plan. I'm happy to report we've had quite a few developments.

Top 10 Unmissable Destinations In Chile

If you are planning a trip to Chile, you may find selecting where to go very daunting. Although not very wide, Chile stretches seemingly forever (more than 2500 miles long!) along South America's western flank. Bordered on one side by the Pacific ocean and to the east, the Andes mountains, the north consists of one giant desert and the south full of glaciers and waterfalls, the country screams diversity and contains activities that suit every taste and desire. The National Parks in Chile are numerous and vast and you can only hope to visit them all sometime in your life.

Celebrating the highlights of this past year through photos!

In my last post I talked about the emotions that came along with celebrating two years of travel. Now, I just want to share some of our favorite moments through photos. Also, we have a big announcement! We feel so privileged to have spent another year living out our dreams and also realizing that this is where we want to take the future too. We are super excited to announce the birth of two brand new blogs!

Celebrating 2 years of travel! Really random thoughts and other ramblings

As the saying goes, time flies. We all know it. Just take one look at your child's baby photos or in my case, your travel photos or worse, your own baby photos and the reality of times passage takes hold. It's a bittersweet moment to remember the times gone by but it also carries with it a hint of sadness that we can never get those minutes back. It helps us to appreciate the moment that is now.

Recommendation: Refugio Cochamo in La Junta, Chile

I want to start out by saying, this ain't your typical recommendation. Most of my reviews/recommendations are based around the fact that you will actually be visiting these places. For example, I would like to recommend a restaurant to you if you happen to be in Valparaiso, Chile or Buenos Aires, Argentina. There is a good chance that a lot of you have those places in your travel itinerary.

Recommendation: Cafe Haussmann restaurant in Valdivia, Chile

Valdivia is home to many German immigrants. So are neighbor cities Puerto Varas & Puerto Montt. Apparently, Germans were encouraged by the Chilean government to immigrate here in 1848. And so they did. Goddam, those Germans are freaking everywhere! Not only have we met more German travelers in the past year than any other nationality but here they were even in food (and beer) form everywhere in Chile!

Recommendation: guesthouse Vista Al Mar in Puerto Montt, Chile

Okay, here is where I am going to rave. This place has been one of our favorite of all the ones we stayed in over the course of a years travel in South America. It's not fancy nor is it an amazing value. So how can it be our favorite? The answer is simple. It's home. If you are feeling slightly homesick or craving the feeling of returning to a home (instead of just a bed), this place is the place to go!

Recommendation: guesthouse Casa Cecilia in Puerto Natales, Chile

We stayed at Casa Cecilia four years ago on our first trip to Patagonia. Back then, our impression was of a clean, comfortable place with friendly service. Fortunately, this time around our experience matched. The place is neither a B&B or a hostel but instead a simple guesthouse.

Recommendation: restaurant Afrigonia in Puerto Natales, Chile

You've just finished hiking the "W" or better yet, the circuit, in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. Now that you are back in Puerto Natales, you deserve a good meal! Come on, you've earned it! Where to go? Surprisingly, there are quite a few nice restaurants for such a small town. But there is one that stands out and comes with high accolades.
